The 2020s are looking to be the decade of privacy laws across the United States. The decade began with California passing the California Consumer Privacy Act in 2020 and since then fourteen other states have passed privacy legislation and another fourteen have legislation in the works.

It is important that business understand privacy laws in states they operate or else they risk legal trouble and fines. The IAPP does a fantastic job at tracking privacy laws that are both active or in progress. I recommend bookmarking the IAPP US State Privacy Legislation Tracker and periodically checking the tracker to prepare your business.

You can find a link to the fourteen states that have signed privacy legislation below. It is recommended that you consult with an attorney if you have questions about what the legislation means for your business.
